Keyboard has arrived!

My funky Kinesis Advantage keyboard arrived at work this afternoon. Too late to try it out properly, but it feels comfy just sitting with it.

The Need For Speed

Looks like the Dvorak layout has arrived in muscle memory. I've noticed a substantial improvement in speed and accuracy this week. Still making some typos, but I seem to (usually) spot them as soon as I type them.

Yesterday I managed to write a nine-page report in just a couple of hours. That's something I couldn't have contemplated only a week ago.

So, four weeks from starting Dvorak, and I doubt I'll return to QWERTY.

Workplace assessment

I had a visit from the Occupational Health workplace assessor today. She suggested a few immediate changes:

  • Lower my chair so that my thighs are horizontal. Very uncomfortable. Soon raised my chair again.
  • Use the detachable wrist rest on the keyboard and move the keyboard further away. This felt like I was stretching out too much, so that was quickly reversed.
  • Raise my adjustable desk. That actually hurt more, so it's back down to very low again.
  • Move my monitors about. So now, rather than having one monitor head-on and one off to the side, when I look directly ahead I now see the join - i.e. I have to turn to see either monitor. Unchanged for now but let's see how it goes.
  • Take anti-inflammatories (i.e. ibuprofen). I'd been worried that this might mask problems and make them worse later, but maybe it's ok.

Since then I've lowered the chair a touch and removed its arms. I was a bit surprised that she didn't suggest that.

I'm being referred to the OH physiotherapy service, and OH are going to look at providing me with a new chair, as the seat of my current chair is too short and doesn't tilt forwards, which I need.

They're also going to look at what alternative keyboards are available. I'd like to try one from Kinesis, as that looks like it would keep my wrists and forearms at the angle I find comfortable.

Breakthrough

This morning I came to my work Mac and tried to log in. The keyboard map is set to QWERTY on the login screen but switches to Dvorak afterwards.

For the first time, I couldn't remember how to type my password in QWERTY!

I'm still making typos, but speed is now starting to pick up, and when I stop to wonder where a key is, it usually seems quicker to just go ahead and trust my fingers, which are starting to learn.

However, I'm still getting pain and odd sensations in my hands, so I have an appointment with an OH workplace advisor on Wednesday.

Officer Crabtree

Five days into cold turkey.  More or less know where the keys are now - it's actually easier to type with my eyes closed!

Have just sent out first email with typos: "Startung next week - all diaries seem fill this week". Only needed to say "wook" to turn into Officer Crabtree from 'Allo 'Allo!

Adventures with Dvorak

No, not the composer, just the keyboard layout.

I work in IT, and have always been able to type pretty fast and accurately.  Some years ago I started to get a niggling ache in my wrists when typing. I switched to split QWERTY keyboards - some Microsoft models, then the very nice Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Pro, which I used at home and work.

At some point I experimented with the Dvorak layout, but it seemed to be awkward for programming, and since the Logitech had seemed to relieve the pain, I took it no further.

Fast forward to last summer. A coffee incident meant a new keyboard. The new Logitech Wave promised the latest in ergonomics, and it did seem quite comfy - or so I thought.

Well, the old wrist ache started to come back. I don't do so much programming these days, so I decided to give Dvorak another try. The Mac has a useful Dvorak/Qwerty mode which keeps QWERTY for command-key shortcuts which are hard-wired in my brain!

It became apparent that the Wave keyboard wasn't helping. My wrists were still kinked and I was cheating on learning Dvorak by hitting keys on the wrong half of the keyboard. So I dug a spare Cordless Desktop Comfort Pro out of storage and resolved to go "cold turkey" on QWERTY.

I have a colour Dvorak chart pasted above each monitor but haven't labelled the keycaps themselves. I installed dvorakng to learn the layout (via MacPorts); I've completed the lessons now with a 95% hit rate - not bad, but it still means 1 in 20 keypresses are wrong.  However, the most frustrating bit is the speed - average 1-2cps if I'm lucky! Think I might be using the chart as a crutch but I will be keeping it around for a while.

Long version:

Since ascending Sof I've been trying my first conduct ascension, to ascend a vegan Monk who never hit with a wielded weapon. Taltos was looking pretty handy: he had picked up a few nice bits of clothing (Hawaiian shirt, elven leather helm, low boots), had a couple of BoH and two AoRs (one from Sokoban), a blessed luckstone and had started collecting enough zorkmids to buy some protection (3 points so far, just short of the next chat to a priest).

I have never seen so many temples in one game! Taltos had managed to find one co-aligned altar, on a level with one cross-aligned altar; there were probably another six altars in the game, all of which were cross-aligned with attendant priests. Grrr! And the only shops to be found in Minetown were Izchak's (natch) and a tiny delicatessen.

I managed to learn a fair few spells - protection, healing, sleep and slow monster were all useful. Having completed Minetown and Sokoban, I'd read that the next best thing for a Monk to do is get down to the Castle before doing the Quest.

On my way down there I met a couple of beehives (wish I wasn't vegan so I could eat that royal jelly) and a little leprechaun hall. I was exploring a shop on DL20 when suddenly:

It engulfs you!
You are pummeled with debris! (etc)

Eek! An air elemental! I whacked it with slow monster and sleep a few times, while frantically casting healing on myself. Prayer worked briefly to bring my HP up, but I was pummeled again and that quickly dropped. "Quick, where's the air elemental FAQ?" Found it and managed to hurt it by casting sleep, hit it & cast healing on myself, but that used all my mana. I then managed to kill it ... but was immediately spat out and set upon by a kobold lord and a zruty.

The long version:

Back in the mists of time (September 2001) I managed to ascend Leela100, a Valkyrie (http://preview.tinyurl.com/5zmvpv). Since then I've been playing on and off, trying to ascend an elven wizard. Most wizards didn't get beyond level 10; a few qualified for the Quest, and I think one managed to beat the Dark One. I got bored with all this senseless murder of innocent wizards and gave up playing for a year or so. Got back into it about a month or two ago, and a lot more elven wizards started to clutter up the Mines of Menace.

This was the first wizard in ages to show some potential, so I slowed myself down and made liberal use of nethack.wikia.com to bone up on enemies before fighting (or running away from) them.

Sof went into the mines at full moon, so she could see where she was going. Armed with her knowledge of force bolt and sleep, and armed with a ring of increase accuracy and a bugle, she set off. The Gnomish Mines were to be found from level 2, which helped Sof avoid hunger, and she managed to find a bag of holding in one of the shops there. The Minetown altar was chaotic, as was a further altar on level 6, so Sof was soon wielding Magicbane. A monster had dropped a pair of speed boots, so Sof left her kitten behind somewhere around there. Sokoban provided a ring of slow digestion and another bag of holding.

It was around this point that the RNG smiled on Sof. A chaotic temple on the main branch of the dungeon was followed on the next few levels by a couple of throne rooms and an enormous leprechaun hall. This latter provided Sof with enough gold (who was L10 at the time) to get a naked AC of -9, while the second throne granted a wish (which went on a blessed +2 silver dragon scale mail). A few levels later a monster dropped a wand of wishing (0:3); Sof wished a few times for two blessed scrolls of charging but was only ever granted one. However, by now Sof was carrying a blessed luckstone from the mines and managed to find a lot of magic markers and scrolls of enchant armour. Wishes went on things like a T-shirt and spellbooks of polymorph and FoD.

An incubus on the Oracle level provided a number of very educational experiences, and Sof was soon summoned on the Quest, where she easily dispatched the Dark One. Armed with the Eye of the Tapioca Sof was becoming quite a menace in the Mines.

Things then started to slow down for Sof. Not yet ready to enter Gehennom she dawdled around for a bit, even clearing a level (which had a sink and an altar) ready for a spot of farming. However, she decided to boost her strength with some nurse dancing in Sokoban; she also decided she wanted to remember this adventure so genocided all h's. She never did settle down and start the farm in the end - itchy feet drove her downwards to Medusa's island and the Castle.

Somewhere along the line Sof became invisible, but could also see invisible, so didn't notice this until Izchak wouldn't let her into the shop to buy candles (of which he had 7).

Medusa was swiftly dispatched, and the Castle was immediately below; cone of cold dealt with the moat. Somewhere along the way Sof had found a +4 silver dagger which helped with the Valley of the Dead and Gehennom; up- and down-stairs were usually close to each other in Gehennom too, which made that pretty rapid. (A pick-axe cleared the way.) A lich appeared in a room somewhere; he, and all his L chums, bit the dust with a blessed scroll of genocide. (He was probably only a chameleon but it wasn't worth the risk!)

Sof had mislaid some of her spellbooks, so stashed those that she could find in Sokoban ready for a spot of light reading. Having found the bell and the fully populated candelabrum, and found the bottom level of Gehennom, she rashly killed the Wizard before locating the vibrating square. Fortunately he only bothered her once while trying to find it, and FoD meant he wasn't much bother either.

Once armed with the Amulet, Sof started her way back up to the surface. The mysterious force dumped her in unmapped bits of Gehennom three times - fortunately she had exactly three scrolls of magic mapping in her bags, which made life easy. The Wiz occasionally bothered her on the way up; he had an amulet of life saving a couple of times, but FoD did the trick. Sof nearly forgot to refresh her memory of spells near the top, and went back to Sokoban to do a little light reading. She got back to level 1, checked the amulet would still not go back in the bag, and ascended to the Plane of Earth (forgetting that she'd left Sting and Frost Brand back in Sokoban).

There was Rodney ready to meet her. It was at exactly this point that Sof found her knowledge of FoD growing faint! It was just about strong enough to dispatch the Wiz for the sixth and final time. Without realising it Sof was down to only 56HP; a quick draught of full healing later she was restored to her full 282HP, never to feel so weak again. A single scroll of gold detection helped to find the magic portal, and there were just about enough charges in her magic markers to find the remaining portals. The portal on Fire was only a few steps away! On arriving in Water Sof decided to genocide all ;'s, just in case, and soon she arrived on the Astral Plane.

Taking a look around Sof decided she had lots of food and so tackled the altar guarded by Famine first. Shortly after opening the door she found she'd forgotten how to cast cure sickness along with a bunch of other spells! Famine died twice on the way to the altar; he was revived a third time but by then the priests had summoned too many ants for Famine to get anywhere near Sof. Hahaha!

Lo and behold, the high priest of Anhur was waiting at this temple to greet Sof, who ended up waiting at the altar for a few hours while I managed to compile a version of NetHack with the dump patch included! [Blew my logfile away in the process, oh well, there wasn't much impressive there anyway].

Hmm, wonder what to try for the next six and a half years?

You offer the Amulet of Yendor to Anhur...
An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance...
The voice of Anhur booms: "Congratulations, mortal!"
"In return for thy service, I grant thee the gift of Immortality!"
You ascend to the status of Demigoddess...

Sof, chaotic female elven Wizard

Hi

Oh whoopie do, someone else has come up with a blog to spout their ill-informed rantings to an unappreciative world.  Yes, it's me.

Why?  So I can play with OpenID, that's why.

Cheerie bye until I have something interesting to say!

YAFAP: Leela100-Val-Hum-Fem-Law ascended to demigoddess-hood (long, boring)

The short version:

The long version:

Leela couldn't help but feel some trepidation as she walked gingerly towards the cavern entrance. After all, she was the hundredth of her line to brave the Dungeons of Doom, and legends told of the whole tribe that had been lost in the Dungeons before the great devastation, known as the Reinstallation, that had wiped out all records of them, leaving only hazy memories.

Taking a deep breath, Leela turned from the tribe and made her way inside.

Blinking to adjust to the dim corridors, she and her faithful dog Fang began to make their way through the rooms and corridors that faced them. Steadily Leela moved forwards, and soon she was heading downwards into further and further caverns.

A few friendly shopkeepers offered Leela some provisions to help her along her way, but she didn't have the zorkmids to pay for them.

Luckily with her trusty hound by her side, the shopkeepers found they would soon have to restock ...

Having descended to the fifth level, Leela found herself face to face with the renowned Oracle of Delphi. But this Oracle had clearly been quaffing one or two potions of hallucination, and made no sense to Leela, and so she continued downwards.

Leela found another upwards staircase, which led to some puzzling areas. A shiny amulet waited for her at the top, and she wore it with pride for the rest of her adventure.

Feeling a little thirsty, Leela quaffed a smoky potion, and promptly fell asleep! In her dream, she dreamt of a King called Arthur, and his fabled blade, and heard the voice of a man called Patch telling her that this was her destiny also. On waking, Leela returned to the Oracle - by now alone, for Fang had bitten off more than he could chew - and waved her long sword at the fountains. To her surprise, a hand emerged from the fountain and blessed the sword!

Leela returned upwards to a second staircase she'd seen earlier, and soon found herself in the Gnome King's wine cellar, to which she helped herself, along with a few baubles she found buried in the rock. Returning upwards, a friendly priest in amongst some shops suggested she should dip it into a certain potion of water, and she felt very lucky afterwards. Feeling generous, she gave some money for the temple roofing fund, and felt much better in herself for doing so!

Leela resumed her downward journey, but it seemed that Tyr had other things to do, for he had only provided one altar. Leela sacrificed many things on this altar, until finally Tyr paid attention and gave her a shiny war hammer called Mjollnir.

Feeling hungry, Leela ate a tengu, and wore a special kind of ring so that she didn't get too misplaced.

Soon Leela tripped over a stone and found herself in a different world. A nice person called the Norn told her about the evil Lord Surtur, and Leela, being a helpful soul, went to fetch the crystal ball which he had stolen. Leela noticed that he kept hitting her then disappearing, so she hurried over to the place Lord Surtur seemed to prefer, and it wasn't long before she was returning the crystal ball to the Norn, who told her she could keep it after all!

Leela carried on downwards, swiftly dealing with the evil Medusa, and soon finding herself at a large Castle. Some special boots she'd found helped her round to the back door of the castle, and she soon dealt with the dragons, soldiers and other general nasties in the area. A wand she found locked in a box gave her some wishes! Having been granted a grey dragon scale mail from sitting in a comfy chair earlier on, she suddenly now had a helpful pair of gauntlets, a magic bag for all the nice things she'd been trying to carry around with her, and some magic markers helped her to feel better about her wardrobe.

By now Leela was feeling jumpy, wide awake, healthy, amplified, very fast and very firm (not to mention very full). She'd earlier prayed to Tyr for some holy water, and Tyr was so pleased with her that she was now known as the Hand of Elbereth - whatever that was. Unimpressed, Leela decided that if Tyr was going to ignore her, she was going to ignore Tyr.

Now Leela, with some trepidation, fell through a trap door to find herself in a spooky landscape. This was the gate to Gehennom. She felt the need for some light down there - she already had a lamp which seemed never to go out, although it didn't always light first time - so she went all the way back to the town where she'd seen Izchak's little lighting shop.

Shock! Horror! Izchak only had two candles on sale! Oh well, she'd found one earlier, surely candles must be laying around all over the place.

Down she went, back into Gehennom - but quickly reading a couple of amber scrolls before she did so. Immediately she was faced with a demon called Asmodeus, and shortly after dealing with him she found herself being engulfed by a hideous monster called Juiblex. Well, a quick blast of a wand helped to deal with him, and Leela was on her way.

After only 20 levels of hell, she found herself on a square which vibrated strangely. Back upwards she headed, to the Tower of Vlad the Impaler ... which took her a very long time to find. To her surprise, it was above the strange, deserted town she'd found earlier. Anyway, she had a candelabrum now, but still only three candles to attach to it!

A day later, a passing warg had left her one more candle.

Another day passed. Leela tried blessing and rubbing her lamp, but a djinni emerged, told her "It is about time" and disappeared.

Yet another day passed. Nurses helped Leela to feel better about herself, but she still couldn't find those candles.

Finally, fed up with killing everything in sight in the vain hope that she'd find another candle, she headed up the Wizard's Tower that she'd found earlier, but hadn't dared to explore fully. It seemed that Tyr was watching her after all, as there were six candles laying on the ground...

Having checked that the candles were OK, Leela headed up the Tower to find the Wizard of Yendor, a tall, lanky man who, she thought, looked a bit of a plonker. He kept taunting her, so she zapped him with a wand, and he dropped dead, leaving a spellbook. Leela knew what she had to do now.

Down to the vibrating square she went, and did the necessary. Soon she had the famous Amulet that Tyr had sent her for, and soon after that she was back at the entrance to the Dungeons. About to leave and show off to her tribe, she checked she had everything, and found that the Wizard had stolen her crystal ball way down at the bottom of Gehennom! Oh well, too late to worry about that now, she thought, and headed up the stairs ...

... to find herself transported to the Plane of Earth. She swiftly dealt with that, the portal being just north of where she arrived. Soon enough she was in the Plane of Air, being engulfed by those nasty air elementals. Luckily there were a few other vortices where she could rest, and equally luckily she had a few potions to quaff to bring her back to full strength. She once had to ask Tyr for help when she was down to only 35 hit points, and luckily Tyr was in a good mood, and uncursed some of her possessions. After that, she tried to keep one of those potions with her at all times.

The Plane of Fire took some time to deal with. Rodney showed up, and made a pest of himself, until his pets started disappearing. Leela took back the Amulet from his steaming corpse, and jumped through. Having swum around for what seemed ages, Leela found herself on the Astral Plane. She'd heard whispers from one of her ancestors who'd made it this far once before, but never believed she'd survive to see it. Using her telepathy she first decided to head for the leftmost altar, which was guarded by Death, and the Archon Tyr had deigned to send her helped to clear the way before sadly suffering the same fate as her beloved Fang. It was not in vain, though, as this turned out to be Tyr's altar, and Leela quickly offered the Amulet to Him ...

The Excalibur patch might be "the way The Dev Team wanted it to work," but it doesn't half make the game easier for a lawful Valkyrie! Dead easy to fight vampires and wraiths, and you get to find traps too!

There were only three altars outside Gehennom - the lawful minetown altar, one lawful altar on level 8 and a neutral temple on level 10.

And yes, it took me three days to find enough candles ...

I got an amulet of life saving from Vlad's Tower, but never wore it. I don't remember ever wearing (or owning) a ring of conflict. I used my last ?oGeno on the Astral Plane, blessing it and genociding a, in the hope that the priests couldn't surround me with anything. Oh well, they summoned snakes instead ...

No screenshot as I play the X11 port. I use the mines patch, but didn't get the new levels this time.
